Half an hour later, I stood in my kitchen with my bloodied armor in a plastic bag. I had no idea where to go. Lodron hadnât told me if we were supposed to meet somewhere. I hoped they didnât want me involved in the questioning of Elise or her dark warrior, but they might need me to heal one of them. I didnât want to ask Lodron, though, not after the way he left.
Ron?
Where are you? he responded immediately.
At home. Where do you need me?
Whereâs Lodron?
I paused, not sure how to answer. I assumed he went back to the castle after we got his darkness under control. Is he not there?
Another pause followed, and a niggle of worry poked at me. Where would he have gone? Especially now, when we had so much going on that required his skills.
Heâs not talking to anyone, AJ, Ronquil finally said. There are a few places we can look, but if you think of anything elseâ¦
I will, I promised.
I went to my room at the palace and dropped off my bloody armor, knowing that someone would pick it up and clean it, then I went to the beach below my house.
Lodron sat on our rock looking out at the ocean. Heâd obviously taken the time to go home and change. Maybe even shower. He wore the same dark pants and linen shirt he always wore when he came to my little section of beach. A pair of leather shoes lay on the rock next to him.
I sat beside him and watched a frown pull at his lips. Whatever was on his mind couldnât be good, not if it kept him from his duties. Something even I knew he took very seriously.
We sat in silence for several minutes before he turned to me.
âDo you know how many people weâve lost to the darkness?â he asked. âHow many weâve had to send to the Forest of Tears because they became consumed by it?â
I didnât answer even though Iâd seen the hundreds of trees in the Forest. That was the first time Iâd realized I had more family than just an estranged father. Grant had met me among the trees and pleaded for my help to overthrow his mother. In hindsight, I wasnât ready then.
Lodronâs voice brought me back to the beach and why I was here. âWeâve suffered so much because of a decision made hundreds of years ago. Weâve been taught to subdue the darkness, to keep it locked up tight so it didnât escape and drive us mad. If youâre right, weâve been doing it all wrong. Why couldnât we figure this out on our own?â He searched my face for answers I didnât have. âWe couldâve saved so many lives had we known.â
He paused again. The pain in his eyes tugged at my heart, but I didnât have answers for him.
âTell me something, AJ. Anything to make sense of the pointless death.â
âI wish I could, Lodron. If I had answers for you, Iâd be spilling my guts in a heartbeat, but I donât know why you guys didnât figure it out.
